 Chess Coaching Tips:
When the kids in Franklin County, Mississippi first discovered that Dr. Jeff Bulington would be teaching them chess, they wondered, "Why would someone come down here?" But Dr. B believes, "If there are people there, it's not 'nowhere'." Fast forward two years and the kids are competing in state and national championships and have even been featured on 60 Minutes! The beginning stages of learning chess can be a challenge, and it's important to encourage new players to strive to improve. Dr. B advises, "It can be crucial to set beginners some "challenging-but-doable" sub-task (like notating a certain number of moves) that does not make winning the only measure of success."  Inspiring Girls To Play Chess!Chess Girls DC is dedicated to teaching chess to girls and offers learning opportunities such as weekly classes, lectures, field trips, and even national competitions! In April, Chess Girls DC sent a team to compete at the All Girls National Tournament in Chicago. The girls solved puzzles on ChessKid to 'get in the zone' before each round! |
