Fool's Mate: The Worst Two Moves EVER

You Need Special Permission to Move Your F-Pawn...by, Ms Jessica Era Martin (aka BoundingOwl)

My students know they need written permission to move their f-pawn in a game.  Why is that?  Well, the f-pawn is doomed!!!  The weakest square on the board for black is f7.  What is white's weakest square?

You can do symmetry to figure out that it's f2.   Without looking at a board, how many pieces guard f7?  And how many guard, say, d7?

Only the king guards f7 and 4 pieces guard d7: the knight, bishop, queen AND king.  So don't even try attacking d7 right away!  It's a very strong square.  Don't do it.

What if you decide to just go ahead and open your f-pawn right away?  The short diagonal to the king has been opened.  Which pieces move diagonally?  Which can you develop quickly?

Ok.  Here is the next worst possible move on the board. The g pawn...and  Checkmate!

This is the same patternMate along the short diagonal.

You could even sac your queen there.  The bishop or the queen can mate.  Fool's mate!  You don't even have to wait until April.
