FM Rose Atwell Scores Back-to-Back Tournament Wins

Rose Atwell, a 16-year-old FIDE Master from Southern California, just clinched a clear first place finish at the Central California Open! She ended up with an undefeated 4.5/5, beating GM Enrico Sevillano in the final round to soar past the competition. She placed ahead of six titled players, including GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez, who is rated 2600! This isn't too surprising, considering her and FM Megan Paragua's destructive performance in Kids vs. Stars last year, winning their match against WFM Anna Cramling and WGM Nemo Zhou. Atwell, just the weekend after the Central California Open, scored another first place finish at the Charlotte Chess Center's IM norm event, achieving her second IM norm in the process. Check out her fifth round win against CM Logan Schafer, where she used a strong kingside attack to gain a major advantage.

FunMasterMike Says…

"It is great to see even more young women becoming rising stars in the USA chess scene. Rose has really gained in strength the last few years. I also love how humble she is on social media, sharing the ups and downs of her journey, although in the last few months, there's been plenty more ups!"

ChessKid wishes Rose the best of luck as she continues her journey toward the IM title and beyond!
