Scintillating Skewers: Secret Quiz

Scintillating Skewers:  Secret Quiz,...by, Ms Jessica Era Martin (aka BoundingOwl)

So.  You have heard of a skewer?  It's like a shish kebob. That's a type of food with meat and vegetables all stuck on a stick.  In chess, there are three pieces in the same straight line.  Just like a pin!  Only the fancier piece is in front instead of behind.

Please watch the video about skewers first, where you will learn how bright and shiny skewers really are.   Some people also call these x-rays because you see through X to get to Y.

Here's an example:

Now it's your turn to make a skewer!  Secret Quiz Starts Now.

1.)  Black to move and skewer the queen to the knight.

2.) Which black pieces are in the same straight line?  White to move and win a rook in two moves.

3.)  White to move and win a queen in two moves.

4.) White to move and win a rook in two moves.

5.)  White to move and win a knight in two moves.

6.)  White to move and win a rook in two moves.

The more you practice these puzzles the better you will be at recognizing these patterns in your own games.
