SuperNationals VI!

From May 11th-14th, 2017, the largest chess tournament in the world took place. SuperNationals VI brought 5,577 chess players from across the United States to compete under one roof. All of that brain activity and concentration created a buzz throughout the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee all weekend long.

In addition to all the chess playing going on, there were several other attractions that were part of the weekend.

Members of the Madison City Chess League were some of the hundreds of kids to get a photo with FunMasterMike.

1. Book Signings! Several chess personalities such as GM Garry Kasparov, NM Bruce Pandolfini, and GM Maurice Ashley, were all at scheduled times for fans to get their chess books and merchandise signed! My personal highlight was shaking hands with the 13th world champion Garry Kasparov!

2. Vendor Booths! In the large skittles area several chess companies and universities setup chess booths with activities for the public. Chesskid was there in full force with, who else, FunMasterMike! Analyzing games were GM Ben Finegold and GM Elshan MoradiabadiChesskid also brought over the last three U.S. Women's champions to race the kids in puzzles. There was also fun from a balloon artist and face painter, where the most popular image was the "angry bishop!"

GM Ben Finegold (Benzoo) went over games all weekend long at the Chesskid booth!

3. Seminars and Lectures! All weekend long different guests held free seminars and lectures. Parents and coaches could sit in a seminar with Jerry Nash on preparing students for international youth competitions. Students, parents, and coaches could attend lectures from GM Maurice Ashley, GM Sam Shankland, GM Irina Krush, and WGM Sabina Foisor, and others all free of charge!

The biggest challenge as a spectator/coach is trying to fit in everything! The SuperNationals has been called the olympics of scholastic chess since it only happens every 4 years. I encourage all chess playing families and coaches to put at the top of your list of events to attend!

See you in 4 years!
