🌟 What is the competition?
The ChessKid-OCPS District Competition is a fun, two-part online event where students from your school play as many Fast Chess games as they can to help your school win the District Champion title!
🎯 Purpose of the competition
The goal is simple: get more kids playing chess!
This friendly and inclusive competition helps students of all levels build confidence, improve their skills, and enjoy chess together, all while representing their school.
📅 When does the competition happen?
Cadre Qualifiers:
- Monday, October 19, 2026 – Sunday, November 15, 2026.
- Elementary schools compete within their assigned cadre (OCPS's official school cadre groupings).
- Middle school, K-8, Orange County Virtual School, and high schools all compete together in one combined secondary cadre this year.
- Each cadre (or the combined middle/K-8/OCVS/high school group), sends up to two schools to the District Finals, determined as follows:
- Slot 1: Most total valid games in the cadre during the Qualifiers window.
- Slot 2: Highest games per enrolled student among the cadre's remaining schools (excluding the school that won Slot 1). (Note: A school must have at least 20 distinct participating students, or 10% of its enrollment (whichever is higher), to be eligible for a Slot 2 or Highest Engagement placement.)
District Finals:
- Monday, January 18, 2027 – Sunday, February 21, 2027.
- Finalist schools compete districtwide.
- Finals games start fresh at zero. Your Cadre Qualifiers total doesn't carry over, so every finalist starts the championship race on equal footing.
- The school with the most Fast Chess games played during Finals wins the District Champion title.
- Tiebreaks:
- A school with a confirmed fair play violation ranks below one with a clean record, even if raw totals are equal.
- If still tied, the higher games-per-enrolled-student rate wins.
⚙ How do students participate?
- Students play using the ChessKid accounts provided by OCPS.
- They can play Fast Chess games anytime, during lunch, class, recess, or at home.
- Every valid Fast Chess game counts toward the school’s total!
📝 How do I sign up my school?
- Complete the official signup form by October 18, 2026.
- As part of signing up, your school agrees that if it becomes the District Champion, it will host the in-person celebration on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 23, 2027. The exact time of the celebration is confirmed with your school ahead of time.

✅ What counts as a valid game?
- The game must be played on an OCPS ChessKid account.
- The game must be Fast Chess (any time control: 5|1, 10|1, or 15|1).
- The game must be against another kid. Games against the computer (bots) don't count.
- Every game counts as one point, win, lose, or draw!
- Games should show real effort. No intentional resigning or fake matches. Repeated short or manipulated games (especially under five moves) between the same players may be flagged and removed.
- ChessKid will monitor for fair play.

⏰ Should we set aside class time?
It’s encouraged! Even 15–20 minutes a week of in-class play can make a big difference. Consider using recess, lunch, or afterschool chess club time too!
🏠 How do students play ChessKid at home or on a device?
- Sign in to OCPS LaunchPad.
- Click on the ChessKid icon to launch the mobile web version.
- No app download is needed - ChessKid works right in the browser!
🏆 What can we win?
- District Champion (Top School): An in-person ChessKid celebration on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, which may include a trophy, prizes, and maybe even a surprise guest!
- Note: a school cannot win the District Champion title two years in a row but a past champion is still fully eligible for every other award below.
- Highest Engagement Award: Recognizes the school with the most games per enrolled student districtwide, a great way for smaller and mid-sized schools to be recognized for outstanding participation, separate from the overall total-games race.
- Top Player: Special recognition for the student who plays the most games at the District Champion school.
- Downloadable Certificate: For students at all participating schools.
- Additional special awards may be announced!
🔑 How can our school prepare?
- Complete the official signup form by October 18, 2026.
- Make sure all students can access their OCPS ChessKid account through Launchpad.
- Set aside time for students to play Fast Chess.
- Review fair play rules with students.
- Share updates and cheer on your students to build school spirit!
