Checkmate in One Practice: Rook Power

Checkmate in One Practice: Rook Power...by, Mrs Jessica E Prescott (aka BoundingOwl)

Guten Tag!  Today we will practice using rooks to make checkmates.  But we won't have any easy back rank mates, no!  These puzzles will include pins, discovered checks, and batteries.  Have you studied your tactics?

Rooks are great long-range pieces.  They can attack any colour square as long as it's in a file or rank.  But if they get up close, they need a helper.  Rooks are most commonly used in back rank mates.

Time yourself.  Can you solve all these puzzles correctly in 15 minutes or less?  On the first try??  All puzzles are white to move.  They will get harder as you go.

1. You have two rooks, but only one correct answer.

2.  Two checks, one checkmate.  Get it on your first try!

3.  Double whammy!

4.  Sometimes a rook needs a little helper.

5.  It looks like they can, but they can't!

6.  It's unusual to trap the king in the middle of the board.  But there he is!

7.  Discovered pin!  Can black move, block or capture to escape?

8.  BONUS!  This puzzle is ridiculously hard!  Surprised  (Must be a trick answer...)

Don't underestimate the power of the ROOK!

How quickly did you solve these puzzles?

20-25 minutes?  Snail

15-20 minutes?  Salamander

10-15 minutes?  Snake

5-10 minutes?  Stork

1-5 minutes?  Snow leopard

Tip of the week: Practice lots of mate-in-ones so can recognize the same patterns in your games!
