A brand new school year is here, filled with routines, fresh energy, and lots of excited (and wiggly!) students ready to learn. Are you looking for a fun way to build focus and excitement in your classroom without adding to your prep list? ChessKid’s got you covered.
Kick off the year with ChessKid’s Back-to-School Classroom Chess activities. They're simple, no-prep ideas and will engage your students, strengthen pattern recognition, and spark a love of learning.
The Vision Challenge is available on the web and helps kids quickly spot chessboard patterns. Students have 30 seconds to click the correct squares matching given coordinates, which is perfect for sharpening board awareness and focus.
In the Puzzle Challenge, students race to solve as many puzzles as they can in ten minutes, building problem solving skills along the way. Puzzles are available on ChessKid’s web, iOS, and Android platforms, so your students can play anywhere.
These fast paced games can fit easily into your day and require no prior chess experience.

After the challenge, display a blank board and call out random coordinates for the whole class to click or point to together. This keeps everyone involved, reinforces board awareness, and works as a fun, low-tech follow-up.
Make it a relay: split students into teams. Each teammate takes one Vision attempt, and team scores are combined. This builds teamwork and adds a lively twist to the individual challenge.
ChessKid Usernames: Create a ChessKid username for each participant.
ChessKid Clubs: Create one ChessKid club per puzzle section (e.g., K–6, 7–12) and add usernames to the correct club.

Have helpers ready to assist with tech or logins.
Open multiple browser tabs if managing multiple clubs.
Encourage sportsmanship and fun!
Pair up students of different skill levels and encourage them to discuss strategies after the challenge. This helps newer players learn tactics and gives experienced players a chance to explain their thinking.
Later in the week, run a “Streak Round”: instead of racing the clock, students try to solve as many puzzles in a row as possible without making a mistake. It encourages accuracy and careful thinking in addition to speed.
You powered through puzzles, sharpened your board vision, and kicked off the school year with chess! That deserves a big round of applause.
Download your Certificate of Participation to celebrate and share with friends, family, or hang proudly in your classroom. Every move you made helped build new skills!
Teachers, you’ve earned kudos, too! You brought chess to your students with style and inspired your students to think in new ways.
