FM Shreyas Royal Earns His Third And Final IM Norm!

ChessKid star FM Shreyas Royal will soon have a fancy new title: IM Shreyas Royal!

Shreyas has been tracking his journey toward the IM title in his article series on ChessKid, and has earned his first two IM norms in the process. You may have also seen the video of some of his best moves, as covered by FunMasterMike. He’s now received his third and final IM norm after a strong performance in the Hull 4 Nations Chess League International GM Tournament!

To achieve the title of International Master, a player needs a 2400 FIDE rating and three IM norms, which are three tournaments in which they played with a 2450+ performance rating. Shreyas' performance rating at the Hull 4NCL Tournament was a mighty 2489!

Finishing fourth in the tournament on 5 points, 0.5 points behind the winner, Shreyas defeated several strong titled opponents on his way to his final IM norm.

This included Shreyas’ final game of the tournament against Hungarian GM Gabor Nagy, in which he showed some great converting technique to end the tournament with two wins in a row:

Shreyas was one of only two FMs in this 10-player tournament, with the rest of the field consisting of five IMs and three GMs.

Congratulations on your amazing performance, Shreyas!

Becoming an FM was a spectacular achievement, and Shreyas looks set to go one step further by getting the IM title in the very near future once it is approved by FIDE. Make sure to catch Shreyas' live streams on ChessKid for chess tips and some hilarious conversations with FunMasterMike.
